Keep Bugs Out Of The Bedroom

The interior experts at Online-Bedrooms.co.uk are sharing their tips and tricks for keeping insects like moths and flies out of the bedroom.

Ushering insects out of the home can be a nightmare which is why the experts have shared their advice on how to keep insects out in the first place.

They advise using scents such as lavender and peppermint oil as a natural deterrent, spraying them around windows and doors.

Nic Shacklock from Online-Bedrooms said: “It can be really frustrating when bugs like moths and flies enter our home while the window is open and it’s a nightmare trying to get them out.

“The good news is there are a few things you can do to prevent them from entering in the first place. The obvious answer is to insert a mesh window screen.

“If you don’t want the extra headache, simple tricks like keeping the light off and filling the room with natural essential oils are great at deterring insects.

“Another great trick is to place a fan by the open window, insects will feel the resistance from the fan which will put them off entering your bedroom.”

How to get rid of summer bugs:

1. Invest in a mesh window screen

Other countries have built in mesh window screens to prevent flies from getting into the home. It’s not common for houses in the UK to have this but you can purchase these screens and install them yourself. You can also get temporary ones that can be removed as we head into winter.

2. Use peppermint oil

Peppermint oil is a great and natural way to deter insects like spiders and mosquitos and it will make your house smell lovely. Add some peppermint oil to water and mix together, then use a spray bottle to disperse the liquid around the house focusing on windows and doors.

3. Lavender

Lavender is another scent that will help keep insects away. Like peppermint oil, you can add drops of  lavender oil to water and spray around the house or get a few small lavender plants and place them around your home.

4. Keep the light off

If you want to keep your window open to cool down then it’s a good idea to keep the lights off. A lot of bugs, especially mosquitoes, are attracted to the light and will follow it. You have less chance of these pests entering your room if you get rid of any potential light for them to follow.

5. Place a fan by the window

Have you ever walked into a restaurant and felt a gush of air coming from the ceiling? This is a fan that’s used to keep flies out of the building and you can recreate the same thing in your bedroom.

Fans ward off flies and mosquitoes, they don’t like moving air. Placing a fan near your window will prevent them from entering.

6. Keep your room clean

Bugs love a dirty environment and it’s easier for them to hide in. Keep your area clean and be sure to vacuum your room at least once a week to prevent insects like spiders from being able to build webs.

7. Call pest control

The odd bug in your room from having the window open is very common, but if you find that you are spotting an overwhelming amount of insects then you could have a bigger problem on your hands and should consider calling pest control.
